Mo and Ro take a bike ride

On Saturday, I came up with an idea for a new social media story project: Mo and Ro take a bike ride. I’m Mo (Mom) and my 9 year old daughter is Ro (Rosie). We have big plans to ride our bikes all around Minneapolis this summer. To encourage us to do so (and to commemorate the process), why not take selfies at each destination (here’s the first one) we reach?

I’m excited about this story experiment. Last school year I did a story project with Rosie, Moments with Rosie, but that was not that much of a collaborative project. She performed; I shot and posted the video. I’m hoping this time around, Rosie can be more of an active participant in the crafting and documenting of our stories. She’s taking the selfies. And, I’m hoping she can help me design a site for archiving and sharing our adventures. I’m also hoping that she will help me write stories and/or create maps, tracking our travels.

Note: I also took a really brief bit of footage of her at the Lake. Here it is, (only) slightly edited:

Hello Utaahhhhhh!

For the third year in a row, STA and I, along with our kids, FWA and RJP, are driving to Zion National Park in Utah. This year, all four of us have iPhone/iPod cameras. I’m hoping that we can use them to experiment with different ways of telling our stories. I’m especially interested in finding ways to counteract the telling of a “single story”/ master narrative about our trip. So far, our Utah digital stories have been from my perspective. I’m curious, how do STA, FWA and RJP experience Utah? What stories do they want to tell about it?

a tentative plan

Each family member is required to create a daily digital moment of our trip. These “moments” should roughly be a minute long and can use voice-over, photos and/or video footage shot on that day and edited using iMovie for iPhone.  Should we able to use each other’s footage too?

The primary goal is to create a collection of stories that don’t tell the same story and that reflect our different experiences on the trip. Another goal is to get the kids experimenting with iMovie. It’s really easy to use and I think they might enjoy creating their own stories–especially RJP.

Cowbird Experiment

Here’s my first attempt at using Cowbird. Since I’m thinking of using it for this project, I thought I’d try it out. Pretty cool.

One note: For some reason, this embedded cowbird refuses to be responsive. With my limited css skills, I can’t figure out the problem. And my search efforts have been fruitless. Oh well, I’m sure Scott can figure it out for the final site.

I like Cowbird. I need to spend some more time on it trying to figure out how to connect with other “cowbirders.” I think this site might be a great place to work on preliminary drafts of my story fragments, especially the ones based on particular archival documents/items.
